Summary:
Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Estimator is responsible to estimate the overall cost, material needed, manpower required, duration and schedule of a project.
Estimator accountabilities:
1. Required to be involved in TESC estimating and project management training.
2. Gathers and retains current and accurate data on costs of goods, materials, market labour and equipment rates from suppliers and sub-trades.
3. Identifies most competitive rates based on cost analysis/comparison.
4. Reviews and evaluates proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and the content of the estimate.
5. Quantifies all aspects of the tender document, including tender requirements, written specs and project drawings.
6. Solicits supplier quotations for material, equipment and sub-trade quotations, whether internal to TESC departments or from an external supplier.
7. Attends pre-tender meetings, including estimate reviews and tender closings.
8. Prepares detailed, accurate, professional estimates by calculating material quantity take offs, equipment and labor rates for tender verification.
9. Recommends multiple scenarios based on cost, engineering quality, or material availability.
10. Advises management regarding cost and schedule fluctuations, changes in available materials, or other factors affecting construction.
11. Prepares final estimate summaries, ensuring they address scope, pricing and comprehensiveness.
12. Reviews estimates with TESC management as appropriate or as directed to by management.
13. In association with central closing, submits completed tenders in a timely manner.
14. Prepare Tender to construction revision and costs impact.
15. Prepare and schedule cost impact for tender to construction.
16. Knowledge with respect to applicable municipal, provincial and federal laws and regulations.
Job specifications:
- College diploma or construction related training
- 5 to 10 years in related field experience
- 1 to 3 years of construction supervisory experience would be an asset
- Experience in construction management and estimating or would be an asset
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet project deadlines
- Financial acumen/ability to comprehend budget structures
- Good team approach
- Must work well independently and unsupervised
- Attention to detail
- Ability to read and understand construction blue prints and drawings
- Excellent time management
- Strong computer skills, Scheduling software, spread sheets)
