Vale Inco - Clarabelle Mill Copper Separation Project
In April of 2006, TESC Contracting Company Ltd. was awarded the Vale Inco, Clarabelle Mill, copper separation project. The project was a multi disciplined cost reimbursable project which lasted 427 days and 235,000 man hours without a disabling injury or lost time accident. With a peak of 256 workers, the project was mechanically completed 6 days ahead of schedule (September 27th, 2006) and the commissioning was completed 5 days ahead of schedule (October 21st, 2006).
TESC was employed as the general contractor to manage, procure and execute the construction activities which were broken down into 53 different scopes while engineering was being completed. The various packages entailed all ground work, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, equipment installation and commissioning of the various phases.
This multi disciplined project involved the installation of 750 tons of structural steel, building all the installation of mechanical equipment and process piping along with all the modification inside the existing mill which involved removals, revamping existing equipment and tanks to suit the new process. All work was executed without interruption to an existing operation plant.
Vale Inco - Clarabelle Mill Roof Replacement
In July of 2007, TESC Contracting was awarded the Vale Inco, Clarabelle Mill - Roof Replacement Design Build Project.
The project scope required TESC to remove the roofing and haydite deck over ninety percent of the operating plant. To accomplish this work, an engineered working platform was required in one portion of the mill and an engineered bulkhead was built over the secondary crane to provide a movable working platform in another portion of the mill.
The construction commenced in the spring of 2008 and was scheduled for completion in January 2009. The project progressed at a faster rate. This allowed Vale Inco to reclaim the secondary crane and have its use during the shutdown.
Overall it was a very intense project that required a large workforce but it has been a successful undertaking and with no injuries.
Vale Inco - Flash Furnace Rebuild 2007
In September of 2007, TESC was awarded the No. 1 and No. 2 Flash Furnace Repair for Vale Inco. This project was performed during Vale Inco 2007 Fall shutdown and was a fast paced 7 day a week 24 hour/day job for 40 days.
The furnaces went down on time with partial repairs being done on No. 1 and a total rebuild of No. 2 which was torn down and new brick, coolers, piping and large portions of the super structure replaced. As the furnace was taken apart many new issues arose and the scope of the job increased by 30% which needed to be completed within the same time frame.
Nearly 140 people were directly employed by TESC on this project during the peak manpower period and it was completed in a safe manner with no lost time or critical injuries.
TESC brought the furnaces back on line and any issues that did arise, TESC and its local forces, were there to support Vale Inco in keeping the operations running smoothly.
The success of this project can be attributed to TESC forming strategic alliances with companies in the local area and having the resources required to complete this type of schedule-driven project safely, on time and on budget. This was a commitment from the President of TESC down.
Lakeshore Gold - Civil
TESC Contracting was contacted in May 2008 to take charge of the Lake Shore Gold foundation construction. The contractor performing the work at that time could not perform to the satisfaction of the owners and were removed from the property.
TESC Contracting was contracted on a Time & Material basis to perform the remainder of the foundation work. The project at that time was approximately three weeks behind schedule. TESC Contracting commenced the work and within one week had a full complement work force. The project progressed at a high pace and in turn it was completed one week ahead of the intended scheduled completion date.
Since the start of this project, we have successfully completed three additional contracts. Lake Shore Gold has also retained TESC Contracting to perform the installation work for the twelve foot diameter and nine foot diameter hoists along with various other equipment installations.
Lakeshore Gold - Hoist
In the spring of 2007, TESC Contracting was invited to the Lakeshore Gold site to asses their on-going nine foot and twelve foot hoists being installed by others and behind schedule.
The civil portion of the project was immediately turned over to TESC to re-organize and get on track with an accelerated schedule that the previous contractor could not meet. TESC’s Industrial Millwrighting department assessed the hoists to be installed and submitted a schedule reflecting half the current scheduled time submitted by others in order to get this project back on track.
This project was not only completed on time, but TESC manpower had to perform extensive repairs and reconditioning to the two hoists in the installation process. At commissioning time the hoists passed certification without delay and were placed into service.
Our seasoned team and resources allow us to expedite projects and deliver a superior product for our clients.
Xstrata Nickel - Backfill Plant
In May 2009, TESC Contracting was awarded the Xstrata Nickel Rim Backfill Plant and Dump Building.
The project scope required us to pour approximately 4000m3 of concrete at the Nickel Rim site. The construction commenced in May of this year and required us to have a large work force performing this project.
TESC provided a full crew of workers consisting of supervisors, carpenters, labourers and support staff. The project has progressed well taking into consideration that the construction drawings were not complete. Xstrata has relied on TESC to complete much of this work and to create a partnership so as to minimize any additional costs to Xstrata.
The project is scheduled for completion in October. To date, it has been a successful undertaking and with no injuries.
Xstrata Nickel - Custom Feed Calciner
In September 2006, TESC Contracting was awarded the Calciner Project.
This project was awarded in two phases. The civil and structural steel was completed with the main equipment installation. The structural steel was approximately 700 tons in addition to the process equipment which was installed simultaneously as the structural was being erected.
This project was executed throughout the winter months and was successfully completed without any loss time injury or medical aid.
