Mosaic K3 Mine Service Shaft Headframe Construction

TESC was engaged as subcontractor by Hatch to construct the Service Shaft Headframe at The Mosaic Company’s K3 Mine in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan.

The scope of work involved the installation of structural steelwork for crane support, mezzanine, crash, arrester and Koepe sub-foundation floor levels, as well as for the Koepe house penthouse. Civil works included the installation of the Koepe penthouse composite roof, various floor levels and the concrete columns between Blair hoist level (150 feet) and arrester level (202 feet). Electrical works included the relocation of aircraft warning lights, installation of lighting for mosaic logos, as well as the supply and installation of lightning protection for the service shaft headframe penthouse.

Working intensely during the winter months in the harsh Saskatchewan climate, the team was exposed to extreme cold weather conditions, which caused challenges building one of the world’s tallest mining headframes, standing at 374 feet. Nevertheless, the project was completed safely and cost effectively.
